Today's Light:
DO NOT BECOME WHAT HURT YOU

Rom. 12:21 (NKJV)
"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."

---

Someone hurt you, and you survived it. But did you check what you carried out with you?

Someone betrayed you, and now you test everyone before you let them close. Someone humiliated you, and now you quietly enjoy it when others are put down. Someone treated you unfairly, and bitterness has started to feel like personality.

They may be gone from your life. Their behaviour may have moved into yours.

Paul gives us only two outcomes: you are overcome by evil, or you overcome evil with good. There is no neutral ground.

We usually think evil wins when it takes something from us: money, opportunity, a relationship, our peace. But evil has a quieter victory. It wins when it *teaches* us something.

When hatred makes you hateful, cruelty makes you cruel, and betrayal makes you dishonest, the original wrong has stopped needing the original offender. It now operates through you.

Overcoming evil with good is not pretending evil is acceptable. It is refusing to let evil write your character.

You can confront wrongdoing. You can set boundaries. You can seek justice. You just cannot let the offence set the terms of who you become.

A child grows up in a home where anger is the answer to every disagreement. Nobody ever tells him it is a pattern. He just thinks it is how love sounds. Twenty years later, a different house hears the same voice.

A leader is mistreated by those above him. He promises himself he will be different. Then he gets the title, and everyone under him gets the same treatment he swore he would never repeat.

Neither is a monster. Each simply repeated what he never challenged.

That is how pain travels across generations. Not because change is impossible, but because unexamined pain looks like normal life. The cycle breaks when someone chooses accountability over excuses, kindness over cruelty, and truth over retaliation.

HERE IS THE SHIFT:

FROM: "They hurt me, so I have the right to hurt back."

TO: "What they did was wrong. But I will not let their wrongdoing decide my character."

Your response today can decide whether yesterday's pain ends with you or becomes tomorrow's inheritance.

CARRY THE LIGHT:

Ask yourself honestly: "What behaviour am I justifying because someone first did it to me?"

Listen for the sentences that give it away: "That's just how I am." "I learned it the hard way." "They started it."

TODAY, I WILL
Catch one familiar pattern of retaliation before it speaks, and answer a difficult situation with truth, self-control, and clear boundaries.

Father, heal the places where other people's actions have planted bitterness, anger, and the desire for revenge in me. Give me courage to confront wrongdoing without becoming cruel myself. Show me the harmful patterns I have accepted as normal. Help me build relationships and a home where truth, justice, forgiveness, and self-control can flourish. Let the cycle of hurt stop with my choices. In Jesus' name, Amen.

"Do not let the person who hurt you decide the person you become."
